How to Play Pac-Man

Once every pellet has been collected, the current maze is completed and the next level begins.
How the Four Pac-Man Ghosts Work
The game contains four ghosts. They do not all behave exactly the same way. Their targeting logic is designed to create different types of pressure around Pac-Man.
Ghost 1 - Direct Chaser
The first ghost focuses directly on Pac-Man's current position. This makes it the most straightforward but persistent threat.
Ghost 2 - Prediction Chaser
The second ghost attempts to target the area ahead of Pac-Man based on his current direction. This means simply moving forward may sometimes put Pac-Man directly into its path.
Ghost 3 - Calculated Chaser
The third ghost calculates a target using Pac-Man's position and the ghost's own position. This produces a less predictable movement pattern.
Ghost 4 - Distance-Based Chaser
The fourth ghost changes behavior depending on its distance from Pac-Man. When it gets close, it can move toward a safer patrol target before returning to the chase.
Ghost Chase and Scatter Modes
Ghosts alternate between Scatter and Chase behavior. During Scatter mode, ghosts move toward their assigned areas of the maze. During Chase mode, their targeting logic becomes more focused on Pac-Man.
This creates changing pressure throughout the game and prevents the ghosts from simply following Pac-Man in a straight line all the time.
Pac-Man Levels and Different Maze Layouts
The game includes four different maze layouts. Completing a level does not simply reload the same maze. The wall structure changes as Pac-Man progresses.
- Level 1: Open classic-style corridor layout.
- Level 2: Additional horizontal and vertical barriers.
- Level 3: More complex routes with multiple turns.
- Level 4: More challenging maze with tighter corridors.
After Level 4, the maze layouts cycle again while the difficulty continues to increase. Ghosts become faster at higher levels.
What Do Power Pellets Do?
Power Pellets are larger pellets positioned around the maze. When Pac-Man eats one, the ghosts temporarily enter frightened mode.
During this period, Pac-Man can eat the ghosts instead of being defeated by them. The first ghost gives a 200-point bonus, followed by increasingly larger bonuses for additional ghosts.
